Google turns 10 yrs. old, releases a web browser, launches a satellite

How’s THAT for an active, precocious tweenager?

Forbes has a decent write-up on Google’s corporate history so far, focusing on the business side. Tech-wise, Google came on the scene with a then-innovative approach to searching and indexing web pages (known as Page Rank). Over time they expanded into a diverse set of net-centric ventures, ranging from web-based email and data hosting to web advertising networks (Ad Sense).

At this point, one could argue that Google has started to make most of their innovations through acquisition of smaller companies, buying out their intellectual property and absorbing their talented employees (like in the case of YouTube). But just last week they took the wraps off a much-rumored web browser known as Chrome. This new browser has some interesting repercussions for Microsoft and the open-source Mozilla browser project that produced Firefox. Chrome is very minimalist in appearance and function, but it takes the tabbed interface beyond just a way to manage multiple pages in a single browser window.

eWeek wrote up some predictions for what’s in store in Google’s next ten years. What say you, loyal listeners? Are they off the mark? Stay tuned to KOPN Tech Radio as the years roll by!
