GPS: Soldiers vs. The Accountants

The U.S. Air force, which runs the GPS sattelites, is arguing with their accountants (GAO). Essentially, they are transitioning to a new GPS system with new satellites, but GAO is concerned that old system will not be maintained well enough while they are building the new one.

At least 24 sats must be in the sky for the system to work at all. Currently they are at 30 or so. Even if they don’t drop below 24, however, there could be quality issues the number drops below 30.

I’d like to insert my own opinion here, but I have no idea what a proper life-expectancy risk is for a satellite.

We Are Back!

The shuttle Atlantis has landed, bringing the telescope repair crew (i.e. Astronauts) back to earth. I say that tongue-in-cheek. I so envy their job.

The mission was successful with no major problems. Just the few minor ones that always come up when repairing old machinery.
